Corruption ruins lives: What can young people do?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We should not be ignorant of the fact that corruption has been in existence in time past but this menace is actually getting out of hand now, its negative effect cuts across all denominations and also threatens development. It is true that corruption is being experienced all over the world today but the menace has reached an unprecedented level especially in Africa. In Africa especially Nigeria, corruption has always been a cause for concern. Usually, the term “corruption” is associated with political leaders with wanting character but it has to do as well with anyone in any field with a dubious character.

 

Young people can do a lot of things to stop or stem down corruption. One of the many ways is what I term “moral sustainability”. That is, inhibiting a state of integrity and shunning any appearance of corrupt practices. There is a saying that “understanding corruption is the first step in fighting corruption”. Since young people are usually regarded as the future of any nation therefore, it is therefore pertinent that we put things right, change the situation we already found ourselves and correct the mistake that has been made and plan for a better corruption-free environment.

 

Individual representation and bottom to up approach is another medium young people can use to tackle corruption by practically demonstrating corrupt-free attitudes and educating other people on the evils of engaging in corrupt practices. In other words, in any organization or business you find you self or any task bestowed to you, try and exhibit exemplary attitude. It is important that we maintain our stand and integrity and be of good example in all character and duties by doing such, so many misbehavior can be influenced especially when good deed are being rewarded occasionally. The bottom to up approach is the act of eradicating corrupt practices first within ourselves then up to the leaders in the community and then to the state  and federal level.

 

Awareness creation is another tool young people can use to tackle corruption. By organizing sensitization events, we stand the chance of educating people on the need to stay away from corrupt activities. Such events has been organized in the past but we the youth need do more and keep on preaching it using any available medium within our reach. If the youths are to assume their role as the leaders of tomorrow as being said most time, then we cannot afford to fold our arms and see corruption destroy our country. In the political environment education is needed on vote protection because most people do not understand how their votes can change so many things.

 

Also, political participation is also a means of tackling corruption in the sense that is phases off political apathy among young Nigerians. Young Nigerians must join politics and change the face of the practice here in Nigeria. The problem we are facing will definitely continue if we refuse to participate in political movements. By joining politics as a young Nigerian we stand the chance of changing and creating our own political ideology that will favor the entry of more like minded political activist needed to develop Nigeria.

 

In conclusion it is not just a mere say that corruption ruins lives in  Nigeria but we the youths of the country need to wake up from our slumber and rise against this evil if we are to catch up with our counterparts in other parts of the world.
