ANC calls for govt help in KZN wildfires

Durban – The ANC on Wednesday urged government and the private sector to help areas in KwaZulu-Natal affected by wildfires.

“The magnitude of the effects of the wildfires also requires all sectors of society to lend a helping hand to the victims,” ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said in a statement.

Six people were killed in the fires, four in the Kokstad area and a two in the AbaQulusi/Vryheid areas.

Farmland was burnt and heavy stock losses reported in the blaze that ravaged the two areas over the weekend.

According to the province’s co-operative governance and traditional affairs department about 200 households were affected.

Zikalala urged insurance companies to process farmers’ claims speedily to prevent affected areas plunging into “economic doldrums”.

He urged government to continue disaster relief efforts in the areas.
